Enjoy a fun holiday appetizer recipe -
plum chutney

Plum chutney, a fun holiday appetizer recipe, is a delicious side dish to have as a stand-in for cranberry sauce with chicken, duck, quail and turkey during the holidays (it will make an exquisite holiday gift!).

It is also a great party spread and dip that I like to serve my friends and family with breads or Indian flat breads. It is one of my favorite chutney dishes, along with mango chutney, that you will just love to gobble up with a spoon!

Don't let the long list of ingredients scare you, it is an easy appetizer recipe with spices you most likely already have at home...

INGREDIENTS

500 g half ripe plums
1 medium onions, peeled and grated
3-4 garlic cloves, crushed
50g gram raisins or sultanas
250g gram jaggery or brown or muscovado sugar
¾ tsp. salt, adjust to taste
¾ tsp coarsely ground chilies, adjust to taste
¾ tsp. ground black pepper
75 ml. malt vinegar
2-3 black cardamoms
3 cloves
1 bay leaf
4 black peppers
A large pot or pan

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Place whole plums, with half the vinegar, in a pan and cook for 20 t0 30 minutes.

2. Allow to cool. Mash with potato masher or a spoon.

3. Run the mixture through a colander. The stones and skins will be left in the colander, discard.

4. Return the pulp to the plan, add all other ingredients and bring to boil.

5. Continue to simmer briskly for 30 to 40 minutes. Adjust seasoning.

6. To test if the chutney is prepared, place a little on a plate and part it with your finger. If a clear space is left on the plate and it fills up slowly, it is ready. If it is too thin, the liquid will fill this space immediately.
