Olive Basil Cheese Spread

quick easy appetizers

This olive basil cheese spread is one of the best, quick easy appetizers you can prepare for a family gathering or party for your friends. It can also serve as a great snack to have with bread or bruschetta while you are enjoying some friends' company.

The ingredients of this recipe are pretty simple and straightforward as everything should be easily accessible. This recipe requires Kalamata olives, amongst other ingredients.

Here are some interesting facts about Kalamata olives:

Kalamata olives come from the city of Kalamata in the Messenia region in Southern Greece. They have a smooth and meatlike taste, that makes them distinct in taste and appearance from the green and black olives.

Kalamata olives can be either used for olive oils or brined in oil or pickled in wine vinaigrette. Unlike the black and green olives, they are a deep, rich aubergine in color. However, when they are brined they appear to be black.

Ingredients

250 g (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
200 g (6 ½ oz) feta cheese
20 g ( ¾ oz ) basil leaves
3 tablespoons olive oil
15 kalamata olives, pitted and roughly chopped

Instructions

1. Combine the cream cheese, feta cheese, basil, 1 tablespoon of the oil and ¼ teaspoon cracked black pepper in a bowl and mix until smooth.

2. Fold in the olives and spoon into a serving bowl. Smooth the top with the back of the spoon.

3. Pour the remaining oil over the top. Garnish with a little more cracked pepper and serve with warm bruschetta.
